Introduction: The Life Cycle of a Bruise
A bruise, or contusion, appears on the skin when tiny blood vessels (capillaries) near the skin's surface are broken by an impact or injury. Blood leaks out of these vessels and collects under the skin, causing the visible discoloration. The color of a bruise changes over time as the body breaks down and reabsorbs this blood. Understanding these color changes can give a general idea of a bruise's age, though this is not an exact science and varies greatly among individuals.
